FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: National Council of Jewish Women Arizona Calls for Nation-wide Opposition to Stop Dangerous “Personhood” Bills
The Arizona Section of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJWAZ) calls for a nation-wide action to stop two draconian anti-abortion bills that are moving quickly through the Arizona legislature.
One bill warrants the execution of mothers and doctors, HB 2650. Another in the State Senate, SB 1457, forbids abortion due to race, gender, or “genetic abnormality” and requires cremation or interment of the “bodily remains from a surgical abortion.”
The bills effectively remove protections in current law for ending a pregnancy or experiencing pregnancy loss. Above all, these bills acknowledge that a fetus AT ANY STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT has full rights, protections, and privileges as a person under Arizona law.
Since Jewish tradition teaches that "life" or "personhood" does not begin until birth, NCJWAZ asserts that laws classifying fertilized eggs, zygotes, embryos, and fetuses as people with full legal rights and protections actually violate the Constitution's Establishment Clause by enshrining one religious vision of "life" in statute.
NCJWAZ, in partnership with other Arizona reproductive rights advocacy organizations, urges everyone to take action against these bills.
